“Art is for everybody!”

We are all artists. You don’t need a degree in art to call yourself an artist. You just need the confidence to make a mark! It doesn’t have to be pretty and yes it can be scary!

We have created art through the history of man, from cave man drawings to doodling on your note pad in a meeting.

I designed this site originally because I couldn’t find any websites or books aimed at those who work with people with learning disabilities. Everything seemed to be aimed at children. When you are working with adults with mixed abilities, including those with limited communication or movement, the information available doesn’t work. I needed sessions that were age appropriate. I have had to adapt ideas and create my own.

Sensory art is a huge passion of mine, to help people experience art through the senses. This is why I have developed my Inspiration Sheets.

If you need fresh ideas on running a session click here! . At the moment there is a 3 for 2 offer until the 8th December.

All this got me thinking. I was not fulfilling my beliefs that “art is for everybody”! Watching an adult with learning disabilities gain confidence and belief in themselves is wonderful but at the same time challenging. Not as challenging as the staff I work with, who have their own pre-conceptions of art, the people they are responsible for and their own abilities.

The amount of times I have had to stop a support worker from taking over from the person they are supposed to be supporting. I often challenge these workers to do their own work. But they tell me that they can’t draw/paint/print. Somehow doing it for someone else is fine.

We all have the right to comment on art. You don’t have to get the ‘deep’ or ‘intellectual’ meanings. You either fall totally in love with a piece of art, connecting with it emotionally, or you just don’t like it and move on.

People often feel intimidated by art or artists. We can come across as a bit weird. Yes I admit. I live, breath, art. I love beauty and find art in strange places.

Art is everywhere if you choose to look and Art is for everbody!!
